Germs are everywhere. They are present in every nook and corner of our homes, schools, offices etc. They surround us. In fact, there are more germs than the humans in this world. And if we have a look around us with some microscopic glasses we might die of fear to see millions of germs in different shapes and sizes encompassing us.

Shocking, isn’t it? But thanks to our brilliant bodies and defensive immune systems which fight these germs likely for 24/7 nonstop. Yet there are germs which are way too stronger than our immune systems to invade our bodies and make us sick. Due to which we all must at least the basic knowledge about how to help our immune systems to build a strong defense against germs.

WHAT ARE GERMS?

Let’s discuss a little more about germs first

Germs are basically the microorganisms that find a way burst in our bodies to swarm over and make us sick(severely or mildly). Kids might think that they are some invisible insects, worms or something like that but actually they are not.
Speaking biologically, germs are classified into four categories:
• Bacteria
• Viruses
• Protozoa
• Fungi

Bacteria: They are unicellular microorganisms. Surprisingly, they are of both types: good and bad. They survive on the nutrients they receive from their surroundings.

Bad bacteria are infectious. Once they enter our bodies they reproduce but they can also reproduce in the outer environment as well. They cause different diseases like pneumonia, strep throat, tonsillitis etc.

Viruses: They are the harmful agents which infects more severely than bacteria and as soon as they invade the living cells of plants, animals or humans, they multiply and make their replicas. The living cell where a virus resides is known its host. Mild diseases like warts, cold, viral fever and flu, etc are caused by viruses. But severely Hepatitis, Ebola, small pox, HIV are caused. If a virus is not living on a host, its life span is usually short.

Protozoa: They are also unicellular microorganisms, which are usually free living and mostly all the higher living organisms are infected any of its types, at least once in their life. They seek moisture and they are either parasitic or non-parasitic and can cause some mild and serious illnesses in the form of belly pain, nausea, food poisoning, diarrhea.

Fungi: Unlike bacteria, and protozoans, they are multicellular microorganisms. They like plants but they don’t have the ability to perform photosynthesis which means they can not prepare food for themselves. Instead they live on the nutrients they get from animals, plants and humans. They reproduce even faster in warm and moist places. Usually they are less harmful than other germs. They can cause athlete’s foot, and itchy rash etc. But they’re more likely to attack food items.

EFFECTS AFTER INVASION:

Once they take up their spot in our bodies, they’ll multiply more faster to extend their stay in human bodies where they generate toxins, which are poisonous proteins. These toxins are the reason behind our illnesses.

DEFENCE AGAINST GERMS:

First thing that we must keep in our minds that although germs are everywhere but we can still avoid them by taking some precautions.

Germs can spread by several means but they are more likely to disperse through the air. But sweat, exchanging fluids, bloods, using contaminated equipments an accessories are other means of their spreading. Germs also transfer from one person to another by means of physical interaction.
